TRUTHFUL HISTORIES
E. D.
My
name is E.D. I have 48 years and on the 24.04.01st was operated of acoustic
neuroma in the right ear.
Everything started more than six years ago, when a humming appeared very carries
in my right ear. That humming was alike the one that feels after go out from
a disco for a silent place and that soon passes. Well, in my case since started,
never passed and I started to get more worried. I visited several medical
otorrino in the first four years and never got one diagnose. All the exams
that I did, kind Bera, labirintite, diabetes, cholesterol, etc, never revealed
anything and all the doctors told me that could not medicate, because it never
appeared anything in the exams. During these four years only audiometria exam
showed that my audition was more and more reduced, arriving to a hearing loss
of about 50% in the end of the four first years.
The
access was by the cesspool. It was open a cut in the format of a half moon
behind my right ear, in the region of the scalp, for then can access the tumor,
which was lodged in the hearing nerve, almost pressuring the brain, because
it had grown of 0,9 cm in 1998 to 2,5 cm at that time of the surgery in April
2001.
The surgery took too long 10 hours, come in preparatives, the surgery in himself
and the conclusion but I did not feel anything, because it was with general
anesthesia. I was recovering me very well, but after three days of the surgery,
recovery was interrupted by an accidental that is called fistula, whose indication
was, in my case, of a liquor leak by the nose. For that accidental, which
times happens, had to get more time in hospital (12 days) because it was necessary
to drain that liquor with a catheter placed in the spine for 5 days to eliminate
this fistula. I finally was home where I remained for 30 days in recovery
and today am perfectly well.
My sequel was the loss of the audition of the right ear, due to the size and
the location of the tumor and also a facial paralysis, which this already
practically corrected, due to physiotherapy that I do daily with much discipline,
alem of the weekly accompaniment and now fortnightly of an excellent physiotherapist.
I want here to let clear that in my case was very happy. After three months
of the surgery I already started a practically normal life, which will certainly
come back to the normal in in maximo 6 to 8 months of the surgery.
The option of operating abroad seemed to me unviable for several aspects:
It is very difficult that some convenio of health covers surgeries abroad,
unless they are emergencies for a travel..
The price of a surgery as this abroad belongs from three to four times
as expensive as in Brazil, and here we have excellent professionals and great
hospitals.
The inconvenient of idioma,do cost of the aerial ticket are inevitable.
The lodging of the companions for a long period, once that after the
surgery the operated needs to be in observation for some 15 days to prevent
accidental eventual to the moves away.
The recovery before the return to Brazil is necessary. international
travels comings of to Europe or United States can take too long from 8 to
13 hours , unassuming time of waits at the airport and accidental eventual.
I hope with my deposition, to help in the decision outlet from whom is passing
what I passed. Have faith and try to feel confidence in your medicate. The
empathy with the doctor is a great step for a successful surgery
